Sediment Removal and Contaminant Filtration

Sediment filtration is the process of removing unwanted particulates such as sand, dirt, rust, and other particles. Having these substances in your water can cause your water to be discolored and even have an odor. There are many water filtration systems that can be used in conjunction with sediment filtration. For example, carbon filters are often used as a second stage following a sediment prefilter.  Sediment filters can also be used as post filters in some cases.  For example, ozonation or chlorination oxidize dissolved iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide into a solid form, which can then be filtered out with a sediment filter.

Point of Use vs. Point of Entry Applications

Sediment filters can be used in many different applications.  Point-of-Use (POU) systems (e.g. shower filters, under sink drinking water filters, fridge filters, etc) filter water where the water is actually used.  Point of entry systems (also known as "whole house water filters") filter all the water that enters a building.  Sediment filters are most often used in point of entry applications to remove all sediment that enters a building.  In these instances, the sediment filter can increase the lifespan and efficiency of down line stages of filters.

Regular Scheduled Maintenance

Changing your Purtrex water filters at the appropriate times, will ensure that you are reducing as much sediment as possible from your application.  If you do not change your filter frequently enough, this will reduce the effectiveness of the filter.  For example, a clogged filter may have poor pressure, poor flow rate, and may not reduce sediment.  In addition, a filter cartridge may become contaminated by bacteria, which can eat away at the filter and can reduce the effectiveness of the filter.  By changing your sediment filter cartridge frequently enough, you can ensure optimal filtration.
